A weekend wrap up starting with the Fast and Furious. For those not aware of this scandal, the Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) Department started a program in 2009 to sell weapons to Mexican Drug Cartels. The idea was to be able to use those guns to track down these cartels and bring them to justice.
They didn’t track the 2000 guns that have been sold as part of the program. Brilliant. Not that these cartels don’t effectively run most of Northern Mexico and cross our border with impunity every day. That wouldn’t be dangerous now would it?
Not surprisingly some of these weapons were used to shoot and kill US law enforcement agents.
”If You Are Going to Make an Omelette You Have Got to Scramble Some Eggs.”
The ATF reports to the Department of Justice, run by Attorney General Eric Holder. The same Eric Holder that refused to prosecute the Black Panthers in Philadelphia for voter intimidation despite the fact that they admitted on tape to doing it.
He claims he didn’t know about this program until just a few weeks ago. There is iron clad evidence he as briefed on this program in July 0f 2010. Sheryl Atkinson from CBS has done a great job of reporting on this and you can see all of what she has written on this here.
This Much Is Clear:
Holder is either incompetent or lying. In either case, he needs to resign or be fired.
Anyone that was involved in this program should resign or be fired.
An independent investigation should be launched so the DOJ doesn’t try to protect its own.
There may be more to this story (was there a political angle to demonize guns on the border to get more gun control bills passed) but it is too early to determine if that is the case. That is why there needs to be an independent investigation.
Atkinson is doing her job, unlike most reporters in the MSM. This has caused her to be attacked by the Administration.
As she said recently:
“The DOJ woman was just yelling at me. The guy from the White House on Friday night literally screamed at me and cussed at me. Eric Schultz — oh, the person screaming was Tracy Schmaler. She was yelling, not screaming. And the person who screamed at me was Eric Schultz at the White House.”
And she followed up with this advise she received from the White House:
“They say The Washington Post is reasonable, the LA Times is reasonable, The New York Times is reasonable — I’m the only one who thinks this is a story, and they think I’m unfair and biased by pursuing it.”
As Shakespeare wrote the administration ”doth protest too much, methinks. It’s too soon to tell how far up the ladder this one goes. But someone is going to get burned.
And one last question. The ATF was created in 1972. Where in the Constitution does the Federal government have the right to deal with…
Alcohol, Tobacco or Firearms?
Anyone want to take a stab at this one?
