On Tuesday, there will be a Roanoke County Board of Supervisors Meeting. There are a number of ICLEI related items on the agenda for the 3PM meeting. Hopefully, some of these will end up for a vote during the 7PM session. If not we have an opportunity to addres the board at the end of the session and we need you there!

We would like as many folks to attend as possible and speak at the 7PM session. To sign up to speak, just click this link.

You only need to speak for AT MOST, 3 minutes. You can ask why the county has an agreement, drafted from a boiler plate ICLEI

.012% of Greenhouse gases are Man Made. Take That you Alarmist Global Warming Scaremongers.

Document to reduce Greenhouse gases in Roanoke County for ALL residents by 30%. The questions you need to ask the Board Members:

  • When did you become an expert on global warming to decide for the residents of Roanoke that they need to participate?
  • What actions will you take to meet this goal?
  • Why are we paying $1200 a year to ICLEI to get these kind of ridiculous regulations?
  • Why don’t we just sever our ties with ICLEI?

If Your In The Green Area, You Will Eventually Be "Encouraged" to Move.

There is so much to cover… Below is the current comprehensive plan of Roanoke County. The green areas are areas that people will be encouraged not to live. Do you live in one of these areas?

According to the Roanoke Comprehensive Plan “Recognizing that our natural systems are vital to providing both economic needs and quality of life for all citizens, sustainable development has been incorporated into County planning.”

While I don’t disagree with the first portion of this statement (the part about nature being important to the County) the concept of “sustainable development” is NOT the way to get there. Sustainable Development is something that few supporters will actually define in any substantive way.

In the Roanoke County Plan, it repeatedly states that “clustered developments” will be “encouraged.” The Roanoke Comprehensive plan also discusses “discouraging” rural development.  Clustered developments are high density housing areas that will house, in this plan, most county residents. While there is nothing intrinsically wrong with clustered development, there are 2 questions you need to ask the board.

  • How will you encourage clustered development?
  • How will you discourage people from not living in clustered development?

You will likley not get a straight answer on this from supporters of this plan like Charlotte Moore. However, if you want to see some ways it will likely happen, look no further than our neighbor to the north, Maryland.

Sustainable Development is what Maryland is doing with Plan Maryland. In Part, Plan Maryland…

  • As proposed, Plan Maryland will ban most new septic systems, essentially bringing rural development to a halt.
  • If local governments refuse to build more dense housing developments, state funding for school construction and other community projects will be denied as punishment for non-compliance.
  • The plan will withhold funding for road repairs and other infrastructure spending in rural areas that doesn’t comport with Plan Maryland goals.

There are efforts happening at the state and local level to bring a similar plan here to Virginia and to the Roanoke Valley.

Do you want to see Plan Virginia? Well if you are like me and don’t, you need to find a way to attend Tuesday’s Board Meeting. We also need to be active in this upcoming legislative session as well, to ensure the new Republican majority guts Urban Development Area (UDA) state level mandates.

There is a lot of work to do to gut this insanity. Help us with one of these critical fights Tuesday night.
