Quick VP debate analysis this morning.
A lot of focus on Biden’s mannerisms. While I found Biden’s behavior obnoxious, I just watched a focus group of independent voters on Fox News. The majority of these folks found Biden “commanding” and informed.
I didn’t see it, but if you find Joe Biden to be those things…you are definitely NOT informed.
Who won? I think both campaigns will claim victory as both bases will be happy overall with their candidate. The Democrats wanted someone to attack and Biden did that. Ryan, for the most part was effective at counter-punching and did so with a modicum of decorum that most GOP supporters will find appealing.
But two critiques.
Biden really hit Ryan hard and was effective on the stimulus issue. Biden reminded Ryan he had been working on behalf of his constituents to get them the pork found in the stimulus bill. Don’t think those letters Biden referenced won’t be in the press soon. The Roanoke Tea Party has been railing against all political officials who go against principle for short term gains.
Here is something, that if properly exploited, can really hurt the Romney/Ryan ticket. Democrats never waiver from their principles….which is buying votes, spending your tax money to “help” people and moving towards a socialistic model. Republicans usually publicly oppose these things….but privately often do the same sort of things they rail against. Biden pointed out Republican hypocrisy effectively in this clip that the Democrats are already making hay with on the Huffington Post.
That disconnect is not lost on independent voters.
Lastly is an overall critique. Democrats are wrong. Democrats are lying about the impacts of their social programs. Those that oppose Democrats are correct on the issues and morally hold the upper ground. Every time you debate a Democrat you should be able to beat them over the head with the facts of their failed philosophy.
Ryan did not do that. A draw (which is what I think effectively the debate was) with a Democrat is always a missed opportunity to expose their failed philosophy. For example, when they were debating Medicare/Social Security….Ryan should just stop and say….”Joe, what are you going to tell all the people when Medicare/Social Security goes bankrupt because you won’t address the fact that, as our moderator pointed out, both programs are inevitably going broke. You are mortgaging the future of all American’s to win an election. Do you not care about Americans my age that will lose every penny they pay into these programs?”
Truth. Just tell people the truth. Most American’s can handle it. The Democrat party is a party built on lies. And when American’s begin to realize that…they will demand something very different.
